What a DNS lookup shows

DNS is the set of records that attach a name to a server and a mail system. This tool lists A, AAAA, MX, NS, TXT, CNAME, SOA and CAA. The chart counts how many records each type has. The blocks below show the value, priority and TTL.

After a move, a mail setup or an SSL validation, this is how you see whether the record has propagated. A new record does not appear on every resolver at once. An empty type means that record is not published.

Type Job If it is empty
A Name to IPv4 The site does not resolve
AAAA IPv6 address The site works on IPv4 only
CNAME Alias to another name Usually not used on the zone apex
MX Mail server and priority Mail is not delivered
NS Authoritative name servers The name does not resolve
TXT SPF, verification and other text Mail or panel checks fail
SOA Zone serial and timers Propagation is harder to follow
CAA Which certificate authority may issue Any authority may issue

How to read the chart and TTL

A longer bar is not “better DNS”. Three MX records and one A record is normal. The point is whether a type you expect is completely zero. TTL is how many seconds a resolver may cache the record. Lower it before a migration so the old IP does not linger.

Use the SPF / DKIM / DMARC tool to judge the SPF text, and the SSL check for the certificate itself. DNS only shows that the record is published.

Frequently asked questions

What does DNS lookup show?

A, AAAA, MX, NS, TXT, CNAME, SOA and CAA records, plus a chart of how many records each type has.

Why is a record empty?

That type may be unpublished, or a new record may not have reached this resolver yet.

What is an MX record?

It names the server that receives mail, and the priority. A lower number is tried first.

Are multiple A records an error?

No. Load balancing and some CDN setups publish more than one A record.

Why does TTL matter?

It sets how long the old record stays cached. A low TTL before a move shortens the cutover.

Is an empty CAA dangerous?

It is optional. A CAA record limits issuance to the authorities you name.
